René Edson Braafheid or known by the name of Edson Braafheid is a Dutch footballer born in Paramaribo, Suriname on 8 April 1983 and he played at left back position.
Braafheid start professional football career with FC Ultrecht in 2003 and made 81 appearances.
On February 10, 2007, Braafheid first played for FC Twente in the Eredivisie game against Feyenoord which to sign until 2010. Braafheid joined Twente on a free transfer. Together Twente he played as central defender whereas before when playing for Ultrecht is in the position of left back.
In season 2009-2010, Braafheid joined together German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich with a transfer value of € 2.5 million on June 11, 2009. He was not able to secure himself in the squad earlier but for half the season has a chance Braafheid nominated for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. At the end of the 2009-2010 season, exactly on February 1, Braafheid signed a loan contract as a player with one of the Scottish club Celtic. His debut for Celtic on February 7, 2010 when Durnfermline win against Athletic in the Scottish Cup.
Braafheid strengthen the Dutch national team in 2006 when it became part of the Dutch squad that won the UEFA U-21 2006 Championship in Portugal 2008. Critics Hugo Borst stated, Braafheid should be in the Dutch squad under manager van Basten for the UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria-Switzerland after Stam and Frank de Boer to retire.
On February 11, 2009, Braafheid made his debut for the Dutch national team against Tunisia.
In the early summer of 2008, Braafheid selected for the Dutch Olympic squad to Beijing. As a player Twente, Braafheid qualify for the UEFA Champions League by beating Ajax because he was not allowed to go join the Dutch Olympic Squad at the start of the season because it must compete in the Champions League.
Braafheid included in the initial squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and on May 27, 2010 Dutch manager of van Marwijk announced that he was part Dutch squad for the final 23. Braafheid together with other Dutch players get a silver medal for being the runner-up in the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals after the national team defeated Spain.
