Carlos Marchena López is a Spanish footballer who played in the position of center back or defensive midfielder who was born on July 31, 1979 in Las Cabezas, Spain.
Most of his career was spent with the club Valencia for nine years and he helped in the five championship competitions including two at the La Liga championship.
Marchena who was born in Las Cabezas de San Juan, Seville province, Andalusia began his professional career at the town club Sevilla FC at the age of 18 years when the club was in the Spanish second division.
In the 1999-2000 season, Marchena made his debut as against Sociedad on August 22, 1999. When Sevilla fell again in the second division, Marchena obtain a transfer to Portugal with SL Benfica club.
Marchena then signed a contract for four years and at the very impressive first season playing for Valencia. In the 2003-2004 season, helping Valencia Marchena in the League and the UEFA Cup.
From his appearance during the league, he entered the selection for the Spanish national team at the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament. In the 2004-2005 season, Valencia coach Ranieri under no success. SV Werder Bremen eliminated Valencia in the stadium Mestala in the UEFA Champions League tournament despite playing in every game Marchena.
During the UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan, Marchena involved argument with several Inter players who led both clubs between Valencia and Inter charged by UEFA fines amounting to £ 106,000 and Marchena banned for four matches played.

Marchena played internationally with the Spanish national team at a young squad with Xavi and Casillas and win the 1999 FIFA Youth Championship. He also was included in the squad 2000 Summer Olympics and won silver medals.
On August 21, 2002, Marchena makes senior debut and playing in a testimonial match for the Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás in Budapest after the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea-Japan. Marchena was chosen by coach Iñaki Saez included in the squad for the UEFA Euro 2004 and in the tournament he gets a second yellow card.
Marchena was also named in the squad for 2006 FIFA World Cup and only appeared in the first game against Saudi Arabia last lap. Marchena was summoned by coach Luis Aragones at the UEFA Euro 2008 and became a major player. Together Puyol, Ramos and Capdevilla, they formed a solid defense that conceded only two goals in five games. Under coach Visente del Bosque, the position was replaced by Gerard Pique, Marchena but he's still playing in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009. In 2010 FIFA World Cup, when Spain Marchena play against Saudi Arabia on May 29, 2010 and played for six minutes in the quarter-finals when against Paraguay.
