Mark Peter Gertruda Andreas van Bommel is a Dutch footballer born on April 22, 1977 in Maasbracht, Netherlands. Van Bommel played in the midfielder position.
Van Bommel started his career with local club football RKVV Maasbracht before getting a professional contract with the club Fortuna Sittard in 1992. Then van Bommel decided to move to PSV after a few seasons to defend Fortuna Sittard.
Van Bommel signed a contract with PSV in 1999. He won 3 titles for PSV in the Eredivisie and 2 degrees Johan Cruyff Shields. Final season with PSV, van Bommel helped the club to the League title and reached the Champions League semi-final. He is expected to join the van Marwijk who is the father-in-law with one of the German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund but would prefer to play with PSV until the end of the 2004-2005 season. Van Bommel was also selected for the 'Player of the Year' in 2001 and 2005. After PSV lost to AC Milan in the Champions League semi-final in April, he confirmed to join the Barcelona club in May 2005 after the club won the Spanish League.
Van Bommel joined together with Barcelona with a free transfer agreement. Prior to joining Barcelona, van Bommel spent the summer learning Spanish in a convent in Eindhoven. During the joint Barcelona, van Bommel appeared in 24 domestic matches and participate successfully brought Barcelona to win La Liga and UEFA Champions League 2005-2006. He won three trophies with the club Barcelona by beating Espanyol in the Supercopa de Espana on August 20, 2006. Six days later, van Bommel has joined Bayern Munich.
On 26 August 2006, it was announced that Van Bommel joined Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves transfer influenced ongoing. Value of transaction van Bommel from Barcelona to Munich for € 6,000,000. Over at Bayern Munich, he was a key player until elected as Bayern Player of the Year for the 2006-07 and even van Bommel was also selected as captain of Bayern Munich's first non-German after Oliver Kahn in 2008. But he failed to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup through injury and van Bommel also did not play in the UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal. Van Bommel was also not selected by manager van Basten in the rest of the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers because of a disappointing performance against Romania. But van Bommel was elected in 2006 FIFA World Cup and played in 3 games except against Argentina.
Van Bommel earned the nickname 'The Battle of Nuremberg "by the press.
After the World Cup, Van Bommel was not called for UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers against Luxembourg and Belarus.
Van Bommel is part of the Dutch national team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Van Bommel was in the starting line-up for the competition against Denmark. Van Bommel was chosen by coach van Marwijk as the new captain to replace van Bronckhorst when the Dutch win against San Marino.
