Fábio Alexandre da Silva Coentrao or better known by the name of Fabio Coentrao is a footballer who was born in Vila do Conde, Portugal on March 11, 1988 and he played as a wingback for the Portugal national team and clubs which he joined, Coentrao can also play as a left winger or right back.
He started playing soccer when he was 16 years old in 2004 when he joined the club in his hometown with Rio Ave FC. In the 2006-2007 season, Coentrao established himself as a choice because Rio Ave promotion and return to compete in the Cup of Portugal. After a season in which he was elected in the divisions' Breakthrough Player of the Year, Coentrao much in demand by clubs, especially Sporting Lisboa e Benfica and Sport. His style is equated with Arjen Robben played by World Soccer Magazine in issue 50 World Talent in 2007.
On January 1, 2008, Coentrao receive the opportunity to play at Benfica but he was loaned to CD Nacional Madeira until the end of the season. On May 3, 2008, Coentrao scored twice while away against FC Porto.
He reportedly had a deal with the Dutch Eredivisie league with Feyenord but two days later it Coentrao join one of La Liga Spain with Zaragoza relegated to division two. After almost not playable, he returned to Portugal with Rio Ave in January 2009 on loan from Benfica and on February 15, 2009 Coentrao scored in defeat of FC Porto.
On December 2, 2009, after he played several matches for Benfica as a left back, Coentrao scored for the first time in European competition during win against FC BATE Belarus for the UEFA Europa League group stage. During that season he had played a total of 43 official matches as the club won the League and League Cup Portugal and he ended the season with Portuguese League was selected as Breakthrough Player of the Year.
On 27 September 2010, when he was 22 years old he signed a contract with Benfica until 2016. After a contract extension Coentrao scored the first goal against Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Champions League.
Its action begins with the Portugal national team at youth level when selected MVP in 2007 in Madeira Cup for U-20 and he was crowned the topscorer in the competition. Next, Coentrao represent Portugal to World Cup FIFA U-20 in 2007 and during that year he also made his debut for the U-21. After playing consistently in Benfica, Coentrao got a call first at senior level national team in November 2009 for the qualifying play-off 2010 FIFA World Cup against Bosnia Herzegovina and made debut on November 14, 2009 at the Estádio da Luz. Coentrao chosen by national team coach of Portugal's 23-man squad for the final stage in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He played in every game until the last 16 of which must be halted as Portugal defeated by Spain.
