Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa, known by the name Alex is a footballer who was born on June 17, 1982 in Niteroi, Brazil, and he played at center back position with the Brazilian national team and clubs where he plays.
Alex first played with the club Santos and first made its debut in 2002. Later he was signed by one of the great English club Chelsea in 2004 and loaned to Dutch club PSV. Joint contract between Chelsea and PSV for Alex with a value of € 1 buy-out clause for three years. During play with PSV, Alex got the nickname 'The Tank' because of strong physique. And during the 2004-2005 season, he helped PSV win the domestic double in the Eredivisie championship and Cup Dutch. Alex also helped PSV in the 2004-2005 Champions League against Milan in the semi-finals.
Alex joined for the second time won the championship with PSV in the 2005-2006 season and continued in the 2006-2007 season which also won the title Eredvisie. Alex scored in the knockout rounds for the Champions League against Arsenal and became the first league for the second team to reach the quarter-finals.
However, Alex ended up not playing against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final because of injury.
On August 2, 2007, Alex obtain permission to complete the transfer to Chelsea for three years after agreeing terms and passing a medical. On August 14, 2007, Alex was presented to the British media in a press conference that he joined Chelsea and made his debut with the club on August 19, 2007 when he became a substitute against Liverpool. Alex also played when defeated Aston Villa and win against Hull City in the Carling Cup. He scored the first goal for Chelsea on October 20, 2007 passed with a 30-yard kick against Middlesbrough and further in the Champions League's free-kick on November 28, 2007 as against Rosenborg. Alex playing in his position as a major player in the 2008-2009 season and scored 1000 goals scored for Chelsea in the Premier League against Sunderland on November 1, 2008. He started the game and scored in the FA Cup quarter-final against Coventry City.
In the 2009 season, Alex scored blooter from 30 meters in the quarterfinals of the Champions League against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Alex got a chance to play in the semi-final first leg against Barcelona at the Nou Camp conducted and continued in the second leg at Stamford Bridge. On May 10, 2009, he scored a header in the Premier League when a win against Arsenal's free-kick. Alex made the first pre-season debut against Milan in World Football Challenge, and he suffered a groin injury on August 15, 2009. Furthermore, on October 13, 2009, Alex signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea until summer 2013. Alex started the first game after signing a new contract as against Bolton Wanderers on 28 October 2009 in the Carling Cup. Then he scored on March 13, 2010 when the win against West Ham.
Made the first season in the Champions League against Portsmouth on December 16, 2009.
In the 2010-2011 season, precisely on October 3, 2010 Alex scored with a free kick against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge and on October 5, 2010 he was sidelined for three weeks because of injury and withdrew from the match with the Brazilian national team against Iran and Ukraine. After recovering from an injury, Alex began playing against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on May 15, 2011. In the end, Alex made 20 appearances and scored two goals in all competitions.
Alex made his debut for the Brazilian national team on July 17, 2003 against Mexico for 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Although he never played for Brazil U-23 tournament, but the tournament is a full international tournament. Alex did not play for the 2006 FIFA World Cup but he was called to the Brazil squad that won the Copa America 2007 in the final against Argentina. Alex suffered an injury and not playing in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and on May 11, 2009 he was called to the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad as a reserve player.
